8 Wellness Things to do in San Miguel de Allende
By: Patricia
By: Anne DimonA beautiful Spanish colonial town about a four-hour drive north of Mexico City, San Miguel is internationally known as an arts community but since I now live here (only during the Canadian winters) I have come to learn that it is also a significant wellness community. If you decide to visit (which you totally should, and let me know if you do) here are eight wellness activities to work into an itinerary.

1- Begin any visit to San Miguel by walking over to the Jardin (the town’s central garden) and take a few moments to just “be.” Sit under the canopy of trees, gaze upon the beautiful Parroquia (the pink, gothic church that in the symbol of San Miguel) listen to the sound of church bells near and far, savour the sights and soak in the culture. Be in the moment.

2- Run around the paved stone paths of the pretty Parque Juarez any day of the week (one time around is roughly ½ km or 1/3 mile) and/or on Saturday mornings participate in a loud and lively, open-air Zumba class. Cost for the class is just 20 pesos – less than $2.
3- Head to one of many spas located in the downtown San Miguel. Some like The Spa offer basic but very inexpensive services, others like the Spa at Hotel Matilda are as polished as spas you’ll find in any major city. There is also the spa at the new Rosewood Hotel San Miguel. 4- Take a two-hour walking tour of historic San Miguel and simultaneously give back to the community. I haven’t taken this tour as yet but I hear it’s good and proceeds go to help provide medical and dental care for Mexican children in need. It’s one of 30 plus charities here. The expat community (mostly Canadians and Americans) is big on volunteer programs and local charities.
5- Check out the classes at LifePath a community centre of learning, healing and retreats. Dream Work, Meditation, Writing/Poetry for Personal Expression and the Enneagram are a few of the classes/sessions they offer.
6- Take a cooking class. There are many options available – such as La Cocina which offers classes such as Healthy Mexican Cuisine and Traditional Mexican Cooking.

7- Take a taxi (they are safe and inexpensive) and spend the day at one of the local hot springs. I enjoyed the Mayan Baths at Arc Angel last fall but haven’t been back to see it since it “officially” opened. Two others that are popular are La Grouta and Escondido Hot Springs.

8- Put on your walking shoes (cobblestone streets are everywhere in Centro), grab a handful of pesos and head to the countless shops, boutiques and artisan markets for a little retail therapy. The San Miguel Shoe Store on Relox is a great place to begin. These shoes are stylish and comfortable and perfect for walking these streets. Best things to buy (and pack in a suitcase) include jewelry (both designer and costume), ceramics and beautiful fabrics made into pillow cases, bed covers and table linens. Of course, there are countless art galleries.
