Here are a few insider tips to experience more of the DC you guidebook doesn't tell you about.
Monuments at Night
PhotoBy eschipul Nothing beats walking around the monuments at night. Although the area is sure to be packed with other tourists until around 9pm, the lights stay on through the wee hours so if you're a night owl you can avoid the crowd! It's romantic, historic and makes for some amazing photographs.
Catch a show

DC is second only to NY for live theater entertainment, and it doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg. Many theaters offer special tickets for day of purchase or you can always stop by the Ticket Place to snag some great theater deals. If free is more your thing, catch the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage every night at 6pm for a free performance.
Full of life, U Street is a great neighborhood to explore day or night. Funky one of a kind boutiques, good eats and even some history line the streets of what used to be called Black Broadway. Stop at Ben's Chili Bowl for something good to eat and if you're in the mood for some unpretentious jazz stop by HR-57 in the evening for some good jazz. At night clubs, lounges and bars, all with a laid back hip and urban vibe will keep you out until morning!

This hidden gem is right on the mall, but never crowded. In the summer there's a weekly jazz concert where the lawn is full of people picnicking. In the winter there's ice skating and hot chocolate!
National Archives Building

Museums they're not as boring as in high school! Besides just the Smithsonian Museums, stop by the Library of Congress and the National Archives for interesting historical exhibits like an original Declaration of Independence or the first ever map identifying the Western Hemisphere as America! Become a spy at the Spy Museum or immerse yourself in the beginnings of media at the Newseum.
