Aurora borealis is also known as northern lights. In Greenlandic they are called "Arsarnerit". Arsaq means ball, as in football, and arsarnerit means football in play - sort of I think. our ancestors believed that the northern lights where the spirits of the dead playing football across the sky. The football was believed to be the head of a whalrus. If you whistled at the northern lights they would start moving more, and you would risk that the spirits would come down and take yoyr head to play football with it! Anyways, that was the story our parents use to tell us when we where kids standing otuside looking up at the stars and the northern lights. We would whistle a little and really believe that the northern lights started to move more. It was both scary and excitning. I do not remember exactly, but today we know that it has something to do with the particles that the light and heat from the sun carries, and touches with the atmosphere of the Earth. Not so scary ;-)
