Below are my top five destinations in San Fran that I always show my friends and it's no surprise that they always come back to my city by the bay for more. 1. The first place I take a visitor in San Francisco is the Ferry Building Marketplace. It is one of my favorite places in the city, especially during the farmers' markets on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday. Unique vendors are open all week long such as Cowgirl Creamery, Acme Bread Company and Blue Bottle Coffee and the marketplace is also the perfect destination at night when restaurants such as the Slanted Door and Gott's Roadside stay open for diners to enjoy the food and the lights of the Bay Bridge.
2. Crissy Field ties with the Ferry Building Marketplace as my favorite spot in San Francisco. A hot, sunny day is rare in the city but when the fog does finally decide to subside, this stretch of beach in the Marina district is the perfect place to sit down and marvel at the perfect view of the Golden Gate Bridge to your left and Alcatraz Island to your right. It is also a great place to dog watch as pet owners let their furry friends run free in the freezing water.

3. Most visitors want to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge and I highly recommend doing that but for an equally spectacular view and a better workout at that, Coit Tower is worth a visit. Coit Tower is situated on Telegraph Hill right next to the North Beach District. The steep steps up to the tower are sure to work off any Boudin sourdough bread bowl or Ghirardelli chocolate sundae but the 360 degree view at the top is worth the hike. ![]()

4. All that exercise can work up an appetite and I always take visitors to North Beach, San Francisco's Little Italy, for a hearty dinner. My favorite meals were had at E' Tutto Qua, North Beach Restaurant, and Trattoria Pinocchio. If you are in the district during the day, be sure to sip a cappuccino at the famous Cafe Trieste, peruse the bookshelves at City Lights Bookseller, and let your food coma consume you as you take a nap in Washington Square Park on a lazy Sunday afternoon. ![]()
5. To avoid the crowds visiting the DeYoung Museum and Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park, I take visitors to the SF Museum of Modern Art instead. The building itself is a work of art and within the five floors are paintings and sculptures, photography, architecture and design. My favorite floor is the new rooftop that was installed in 2009 that features an open-air patio with rotating sculptures on display and a coffee bar. ![]() |
